Cristiano Ronaldo’s golden age seems to go on forever

Ronaldo did it again. The Champions League’s all-time leading goal-scorer added a hat trick on Tuesday in Real Madrid’s first-leg semifinal victory against Atletico Madrid. It was a dazzling display from the home side, who are in prime position to make the final after  3-0 win.He is the only player to score back-to-back hat-tricks in the Champions League elimination stage after scoring three against Bayern.

The Portuguese star moved to 103 goals in Champions League football, more than Atletico have ever scored in the competition proper. But it is remarkable that Simeone’s side keep coming unstuck against Real in Europe. No other team has denied the red-and-white brigade the Champions League trophy in the past three seasons but its city neighbour. Unless Atletico find a miraculous way back, their tortured relationship with Real in Europe will continue.

Ronaldo said: “I just want them not to whistle me. I will always try and give everything for them.”

Ronaldo remains at the peak he first reached a decade ago. He may be better now. He shows no signs of deterioration, neither of physicality nor ambition. And, at 32, he’s older than Rooney by nine months.

Ronaldo’s got his team on track for its first double – league and Europe – since 1958. The Real of that era – Alfredo Di Stefano’s Real, Ferenc Puskas’s Real – is often mentioned as the greatest side in history.

No one will say that of Ronaldo’s Real.
